Adjust your monitor settings so that you can see each step
1. Adjust the contrast(white point) all the way up (this is the normal setting)
2. Adjust the brightness(black point) until you see the difference between the first and second step on the gray scale
The first step should not be lighter than the unscanned edges of your monitor
3. Some people adjust the contrast down to match their paper
